12 Leadership Maxims That Define Who You Are
What is the foundation of good leadership and being a good leader? Is it experience? Is it character? Is it knowledge and self-study? Or is it how we live our lives; how we interact with those around us, and the associated personal priorities that drive why and what we do?

“The 5 Reads”  (8hrs)*

Click here for an informational video

Monday January 13, 2020 – 8:00am – 5:00pm

Breakfast and Lunch included

The most significant aspect of being a successful Incident Safety Officer is the ability to continually improve on The 5 Reads. Building on the outstanding training programs developed by Dave Dodson, The 5 Reads is a class developed by the Fire Dept Safety Officers Assoc for Company Officers, Incident Safety Officers, and Chief Officers where they can learn to take their ability to “Read 5 Critical Factors” to the next level.

Mike Richardson, FDSOA Eastern Director, shares “We’re trying to fill that need between I’ve got my certification and how do I keep on top of my skills? This has been the missing piece on strengthening the role of the Safety Officer today.”

The class will review and emphasize the significance of The 5 Reads which includes:

  • Risk: Identification, Evaluation, Prioritization, Mitigation, and Monitoring
  • Buildings: Type, Era, Use, Size, Related Hazards and Predicting Collapse
  • Smoke: Volume, Velocity, Density, Color, Influencing Factors, and Predicting Fire Behavior
  • Hazardous Energy: Thermal, Mechanical, Wind, Chemical, Electrical, Water
  • Firefighters: Capabilities, Mental and Physical Status

* You cannot be enrolled in the ISO or HSO Academy running concurrently.

Incident Investigation – Hold the Blame – Hunt the Cause (8hrs)*

Mark Keough, MPA
Operations Deputy Chief
Mesa Fire and Medical Department

Tuesday January 14, 2020 – 8:00am – 5:00pm

Breakfast and Lunch included

Fire department reviews or investigations into unfortunate events are difficult.  Unfortunately, we have a history of finding blame more readily than discovering causation. These less than desirable outcomes disrupt individual credibility and organizational effectiveness in the long run because they don’t address the event as a symptom of deeper issues in culture, training or administration, to name a few.  To reverse these outcomes this class is designed to show participants how to conduct the details of a Review, which should preserve the credibility of the process and the individual(s), and increase organizational effectiveness over time.  The three phases of Reviews are Discovery, Analysis, and Interpretation.  The class will use timelines of real incidents to do mock Discovery, Analysis and Interpretation of events thus giving students a frame of reference for their own department’s needs.  Participants in this class should be from organizations that are striving to attain internal higher reliability characteristics and are willing to look honestly at their organizational performance.

* You cannot be enrolled in the ISO or HSO Academy running concurrently.

“Sets & Reps” for Incident Safety Officers (8hrs)*

Tuesday January 14, 2020 – 8:00am – 5:00pm

Class held off site at Mesa Community College – Transportation provided

Mesa Community College Downtown Center
Virtual Incident Command Center
145 N. Centennial Way
Mesa AZ 85201

Breakfast and Lunch included

This class is for individuals who have previously completed ISO (Incident Safety Officer) training. The participants will spend the day running through “Sets & Reps” via photos, videos, and scenarios where they can practice and improve their ISO skillset.

It will start with the participants practicing the 5 critical fireground reads including Risk, Smoke, Buildings, Hazardous Energy and Firefighters. Once the participants have gathered that critical information, they will practice developing appropriate risk management strategies. Next, they will practice interacting with an Incident Commander to determine if there is an appropriate level of risk management in the incident action plan. Finally, they will practice determining if an ISO intervention is warranted and how that intervention can best be delivered given the circumstance. The participants will also be given the opportunity to practice their post incident skills by analyzing everything that took place and making recommendations for avenues of improvement going forward.

The participants will also be given the opportunity to act as an ISO or SO (Safety Officer) for several other non-fire scenarios including technical rescues, roadway incidents, training, and public relations events.

This “Sets & Reps” class will be an excellent follow on to “The 5 Reads” which is being offered on Monday as it will allow the students to repeatedly practice the knowledge and skills that they will acquire in that class.

* You cannot be enrolled in the ISO or HSO Academy running concurrently.

ProBoard Skills Completion for Incident Safety Officers (8hrs)*

Tuesday January 14, 2020 – 8:00am – 5:00pm

Class held off site at Mesa Community College – Transportation provided

Mesa Community College Downtown Center
Virtual Incident Command Center
145 N. Centennial Way
Mesa AZ 85201

Breakfast and Lunch included

This practical skills evaluation session is for individuals who have previously completed a FDSOA ISO (Incident Safety Officer) class, have successfully completed the written testing in the past year, but they have NOT been able to complete the required practical skills evaluation for Pro Board certification. The participants will spend the day running through skills evaluations via incident simulation and written projects. At the end of the class the students will have had the opportunity to successfully complete 6 practical skills evaluations which meets the requirements for certification.

The practical skills that may be evaluated in the class can be found at:

https://www.fdsoa.org/iso-skill-sheets/

6 skills will be randomly selected from the available 19 skills for evaluation.

It is critical that students come to this class with the necessary knowledge and skills required. This session is for evaluation purposes, and there will not be any significant level of instruction provided for the students to gain the required knowledge and skills.

* You cannot be enrolled in the ISO or HSO Academy running concurrently.
