Health and Safety Officer Academy
The subject matter presented in this course was developed with an emphasis on identifying and understanding applicable OSH regulatory standards; hazard based compliance; use of best practices; hazard analysis; hazard controls; risk management; and to provide the knowledge necessary to develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive health & safety program.
The course is 35 hours in length and includes both lecture and practical exercises. The student will be introduced to the world of OSHA regulations, the OSH ACT, NFPA, NIOSH, EPA, and other regulatory requirements applicable to the FES organization. Additional subject matter will include topics related to inspections, training requirements, risk management strategies, industrial hygiene, information management, reports, accident investigations and other
content related to organizational safety & health. The course will also address OSHA updates in fall protection, asbestos/silica, hazard communication, PPE, confined spaces, working surfaces, and others.
This course will also prepare the student to take the Fire Service Professional Qualifications (Pro Board) certification exam for the Health & Safety Officer using the 2015 edition of NFPA 1521. The Pro-Board HSO written certification exam will be administered through the Fire Department Safety Officer’s Association upon conclusion of the course.
Attendees should include: Health & Safety Officers, previously certified Health Safety Officers, as well as supervisors, managers, and personnel with collateral OSH responsibilities. For personnel with previous HSO certification the content in this course provides an opportunity to learn about recent regulatory changes
and, exposes the student to material typically found only in advanced health & safety courses.
