Newport News Safety Officer promotes mental health awareness, awarded Virginia Firefighter of the Year – Daily Press
Sidney Lucas began to recognize a problem in the fire service about five years ago while researching Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD.
The Newport News Fire Department lieutenant and safety officer was looking for information for a friend in the Army, but he kept coming across studies about his own career. What he saw was the start of a growing national awareness of an increase in suicides, divorces, substance abuse and other health mental health issues in emergency services.
He said the research prompted him to begin looking for ways to tackle the problem at home.
